Has the Gulf Coast been forgotten?
by Staff

Over the past few weeks the media attention on the tragedy of the Gulf Coast, particularly the Mississippi gulf coast has waned.

We aren't the only ones to notice. An editorial in the Sun Herald (see article) titled "Mississippi's Invisible Coast" appeared recently.

Other sites have also taken notice:

From AP (Editor and Publisher) article here. Writer Michael Kunzelman discusses that many feel New Orleans problems are overshadowing the Mississippi Gulf Coast problems.

John Gisham from the International Herld Tribune (see article). Notes that months after Katrina many people are still living in tents awaiting the promised help from FEMA.  The famous Fema Trailer...many which set idle staged in middle Middle Mississippi awaiting delivery.

The New York Times (See article) States... Silent Nights on the Gulf Coast. "The tragedy of Katrina will worsen if the Gulf Coast is forgotten. People can't survive in tents. And FEMA trailers aren't meant to be longtime homes..."

We can not allow Mississippi and the Gulf Coast to be forgotten!. The magnitude of this disaster simply overwhelms the imagination.  We can not suffer this in silence.

Months after the storm many residents are "still" waiting on their insurance coverage, and in some case they havent even had an insurance adjuster visit whats left of thier homes.  While I understand out of hundreds of thousands of claims processed...many are still either delayed, lost or mishandled.

Its sad that a large percentage of Americans do not fully understand the scope of the damage done not only to New Orleans but the rest of the Gulf Coast area.  Even not counting the massive damage in Louisiana, the Mississippi Gulf Coast alone would present the Worst natural Disaster in America.

Yet another article (here) from the website Fredricsburg.com with the ongoing plight, states an interesting fact that only the Civil War displaced as many Americans as Katrina....

Some of you might have notices a poll we are running about finding some open Restaurants.  It IS getting better. IHOP on HWY 49 in Gulfport is now open 24 hours......

Information on Fema Trailer delivery statistics are located here.

It will be interesting to see the current statistics on Employment in the 6 Southern Gulf Coast counties.   It will get better but it will need EVERYONES help. Local people to buy local and help local businesses. Tourists to understand and KNOW the Gulf Coast will be back better than ever.  Dont allow the plight of thousands to fade to a memory.

Let us learn from this and rebuild better, stronger and perhaps wiser....
